Turkmenistan

In December 2009 Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) took the difficult decision to close the last of its programmes in Turkmenistan. MSF was present in the country for more than ten years and thus had a unique opportunity to witness the challenges facing the healthcare system but also felt it had reached the limit of what could be achieved with the project under the given circumstances. Lastly, MSF supported the paediatric and reproductive health departments of the district hospital in Magdanly, Eastern Turkmenistan. MSF still sees a big need for medical support in the country and continues to seek openings with the government to support the treatment of multi drug resistant tuberculosis.

In a report released in April 2010, the organisation sheds light on some of the key issues in Turkmenistan’s healthcare system and raises concerns about the role of international actors in the country
