Communications Unit Intern
Required by:
28 February 2012 Period: Starting 12th March, for 3 months.
Role Description
To assist the Communications Officer in various media-related administrative tasks, such as archiving media footage, updating media lists, media monitoring, compiling MSF media mentions, researching specific media opportunities; as well assisting with information sharing within the office by updating the MSF information boards with MSF content.
Main Duties
- ARCHIVE MANAGEMENT: Assisting with cataloguing/archiving audio, video and other communications material.
- DATA INPUT/UPDATING: Inputting and updating media contacts and lists on the online media database (Augure)
- MONITORING: Assist with daily/monthly media monitoring by matching media requests and MSF mentions against our online content database (Newsclip).-

AD HOC RESEARCH:
- Monitor the SA media for specific issues when requested.
- Assist with identifying media opportunities with SA broadcasting or print media for social responsibility reporting. -
COMMUNICATIONS SUPPORT:
- Keep the information boards in the MSF SA office updated with latest MSF and related activity content.
- Support other communications related activities when required during events, campaigns or projects.
Length of commitment: 3 months
Estimated total hours: 20 hours/week

Qualifications sought:
- Minimum matric qualification, preferably university student or graduate.
- Preferably studying media/communications-related subject, or with demonstrable interest in working in the media/communications field.
- Knowledge of South African media landscape, including community media.
- Interest in local/international current affairs and humanitarian work.
- Knowledge of Word, Excel essential; knowledge of online media databases desirable.
- Creative and flexible approach to work, and ability to work within a team.

- To gain experience of working within a Communications Unit in an international humanitarian NGO.
- To understand the role of a Communications Officer and through hands-on supervision, to get an introduction to the skills required of a Communications Officer.
- To learn about Médecins Sans Frontières and attend and contribute to weekly office meetings and operational updates.
- To gain direct experience of working within South and southern African media, in particular those related to health and humanitarian issues.
