Give in

celebration

By including MSF in the celebration of a special occasion you not only support us financially, but also increase awareness of our work. Whether the gift is in lieu of wedding or birthday presents, or to mark an anniversary, a donation of this kind extends the goodwill of the occasion far beyond the day itself, helping to ensure emergency medical aid for people in crisis situations around the world. Give in memory

A memorial donation is a way to make a lasting tribute to someone special. The work carried out in their name by MSF has positive, long-term effects, extending and saving lives by meeting basic healthcare needs.

Why should I fundraise for MSF?

More and more people are choosing to support MSF. Some are taking up a personal challenge to raise money through activities such as running their first marathon or climbing a mountain. Other people are organising concerts, jumble sales or collections amongst friends.

You may want to set up an online fundraising page to help you collect donations or sponsorship. They are a great tool that can make fundraising a hassle free process. For more information, click here.

Donations from Corporate and/or Trusts and Foundations

MSF welcomes support from you. For more information please contact Stephen Miller at stephen.miller@joburg.msf.org. Please read our international corporate fundraising code.

Leave a Legacy

Face to Face – Awareness and fundraising

Doctors Without Borders South Africa are currently represented by teams of canvassers in streets and malls in four cities; Cape Town, Johannesburg and Pretoria. With branded banners, t-shirts and a lot of knowledge about the organisation, the canvassers approach and speak to members of the public.

Kelly Barlow, 23, from Durban, joined the Medecins Sans Frontieres/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) Face to Face Fundraising team in May 2011, and has been fundraising in Durban, Johannesburg and most recently along the Garden Route and in Port Elizabeth. Here she talks about what being on the road with the F2F team is like:

What response have you been getting from the public while fundraising with MSF along the Garden Route?

People are usually interested in what MSF does. We find that most elderly people know about us, and those who can want to contribute. Many foreigners also know about MSF, and many of them already donate in their own countries. Those who haven’t heard of us directly still know vaguely about a humanitarian organisation that provides free medical care and assistance to those in need, or have seen MSF’s current TV advert in South

What issues do you mostly talk about with the public on this tour?

I focus a lot on the work MSF does in South Africa, and often talk about TB and Drug-Resistant TB because I find most people here know how prevalent it is, and usually know someone who has had TB themselves.

To some, I talk about the work we do with migrants, especially our mobile health project for migrants living in slums in downtown Johannesburg. Most people know about the prejudice that migrants from Zimbabwe and other areas have faced, and those who have experienced discrimination or difficult situations themselves can often sympathise.

Another frequent talking point is MSF’s push to use artesunate instead of the traditional quinine to treat malaria in Africa. Because malaria is the leading cause of death among Africa’s children, and most people want to help children, it’s exciting to talk about this breakthrough medicine and how MSF uses it.

Why did you choose this job?

I've always had a great interest in MSF, both for its work in South Africa, as well as places like Somalia and Afghanistan, where many others don’t. I have a lot of respect for MSF’s policy of remaining neutral and independent, and I wanted to be a part of their fundraising process, as I believe it is the best way to sustain such work.

MSF provides medical - and sometimes psychological - care for those who are least able to afford it. Giving people their health back can mean so much more, like being able to work and provide for one’s family. I feel honoured to work for an organisation that gives vital medical care to people all around the world, including here in South Africa.
