Gilead Sciences has become the first pharmaceutical company to sign a licensing agreement with the Medicines Patent Pool to increase access to HIV and Hepatitis B treatment in developing countries... "The licensing agreement is a positive step but we have some reservations; it excludes middle-income countries like Brazil and China, which will now have to issue compulsory licences if they want to manufacture the drugs still in development," Tido von Schoen-Angerer, executive director of Médecins Sans Frontières' Campaign for Access to Essential Medicines, told IRIN/PlusNews. MSF response focused on mental health and distribution of emergency relief   In June heavy floods hit Alagoas and Pernambuco States in northern Brazil, where the flooding left thousands of houses completely destroyed. The four areas most affected are Branquinha, Santana do Mundau, Uniao dos Palmares and Murici. MSF activities for flood victims end in Alagoas, Brazil
After severe floods struck northern Brazil in June, Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) sent a team to help authorities improve conditions for the 25,000 people displaced from their homes in Alagoas state, and to provide counselling for people who had lost everything in the floods. More than 630 people are estimated to have been killed in the flooding and resulting landslides while thousands have been left homeless.
