Ebola Emergency Update: 27 March 2019

Main figures about the outbreak

Epidemiologic situation (as per Ministry of Health figures) – 27 March 2019:

  • Total cases since the beginning of the epidemic: 1044 (978 confirmed and 66 probable*).
  • Total number of death: 652 (586 confirmed and 66 probable*).
  • Total number of cured: 326.
  • Total number of people vaccinated: 92.868 people.

* Probable” refers to community deaths that have links to confirmed Ebola cases but which were not tested before burial

MSF Response to Ebola outbreak in DRC

MSF has been taking part in the emergency response to the Ebola outbreak since the declaration of the epidemic on 1 August 2018. MSF is currently running the following activities in North-Kivu and Ituri:

  • Caring for patients affected by the virus or suspected to be infected by the virus: supporting an ETC (still on standby) in Goma (22 beds), managing Transit Centres in Kayna (12 beds) and in Bwana Sura (20 beds) and an isolation unit in Bunia;
  • Supporting the local healthcare system, including preparedness to handle Ebola patients (in the Lubero General Hospital);
  • Running Communication & Health Promotion for the communities;
  • Running IPC (Infection Prevention & Control): protecting local health structures (and their workers) by helping with screening patients at the entrance, hand and foot disinfection, capacity for short-term isolation of suspect patients and decontamination of the facilities where confirmed Ebola patients have transited;
  • Training medical staff;
  • Supporting surveillance activities.
