Siyabulela Qwaka, a drug-resistant TB survivor was lucky to access a high-strength antibiotic, Linezolid to cure XDR-TB  under the Doctors Without Borders (MSF) pilot project in Khayelitsha... Then, very few patients could access the drug, but now it is hoped that many patients suffering from the disease are likely to be cured as the Medicines Control (MCC) has approved the use of Linezolid's generic form... MSF applied for special Section 21 permission to import the generic for its pilot in Khayelitsha, at a cost of just more than R80 a tablet. MSF TB doctor Dr Jeninifer Hughes described the decision as a "victory and the first steps towards guaranteeing broader access to the drug"... The drug was not developed to treat TB, but a number of clinical trials had found it to be effective against drug-resistant TB.
