Doctors without Borders (MSF) has issued a warning to both the national Health Department and the Eastern Cape health department over the need to tackle drug supply problems in order to prevent future crises... In December last year many organisations, including MSF, intervened at the Mthatha medical depot, where more than 100000 patients were being threatened by a serious shortage of antiretroviral medication (ARVs). The Mthatha depot, which supplies vital medicines, including the life-prolonging drugs to 300 health facilities in the region, was unable to dispense drugs for many weeks because more than 70% of workforce at the depot went on an illegal strike in October...
