New MSF research shows that patients infected with Ebola arriving for treatment have lower viral loads, or less of the virus, in their blood... Research has shown that the higher the viral load, the higher the likelihood that the patient will die... Ebola is incurable but supportive treatment and keeping patients hydrated helps some of its victims to survive... Gilles van Cutsem, MSF medical co-ordinator for South Africa, compared blood test results of patients treated at a clinic in Sierra Leone in July with those of patients treated at the same clinic in November.
