The forced end of the Aquarius happens at a critical time as the world’s deadliest migration route has become even more of a death trap for vulnerable people and principles of international law. This year alone, more than 2,100 have died in the Mediterranean, with departures from Libya accounting for the overwhelming majority of deaths. At the same, more than 14,000 have been forcibly returned to Libya in violation of international law. Migrants, refugees, asylum seekers, and even Libyans themselves are being denied their human right to flee from harm and seek safety.
