SUMMARY OF POSITION

Based in Eshowe/Mbongolwane the driver will be responsible for safe transport of the staff and goods of MSF. He/ She will ensure the respect of the South African driving laws and regulations, MSF driving policy, MSF vehicle maintenance procedures, MSF security guidelines. He/ She will also be responsible for updating all the relevant documentation of his/her vehicle(s).

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Matric Certificate essential
  • Valid Driver’s License essential
  • Valid Public Driving Permit (PDP) essential
  • 2 years driving experience essential
  • Recommendation letter advantageous
  • Fluency in both English essential and IsiZulu languages advantageous
  • Readiness to travel on regular basis within the project area 
  • Flexibility to work outside normal working hours as per roster & needs of the survey
  • Willingness to adhere to the humanitarian principles of Médecins Sans Frontières
  • South African citizen or holder of a valid South African work permit.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Driving: Safely and securely transports MSF staff and goods as required by MSF management; Ensures that the vehicle is parked safely in a respective designated parking in Eshowe or Mbongolwane and the vehicle key is handed over to designated MSF staff member to be locked securely for the night

►Maintenance: Keeps the vehicle in excellent working condition at any time; notes any mechanical problems in the logbook and reports to the Project Logistician; Fills up the vehicle with petrol/diesel, oil and water every Friday (or sooner if necessary); The driver is responsible for the cleanliness of the vehicle

►Administration: Ensure that at all time the necessary administrative document relating to the vehicle are always inside the car e.g. Copies of Insurance Certificate, Log Book, MSF Log Book etc.

►Safety: Loads and unloads the vehicle correctly; Under no circumstances transports people in the rear of a pick-up; Strictly observes the national speed limits: 120km/h on a freeway; 80km/h on National roads; 60km/h in a built up area; Ensures the seat belts are worn by all passengers at all times; It is strictly forbidden to consume any alcohol or drugs before or whilst driving; In case of an accident, contacts the Project Logistician immediately.

►Transporting goods and items: The driver is responsible for all items in his vehicle and must physically identify each items entrusted to him/her. He must validate that the items in the vehicle are in accordance with the waybill/delivery note he has received. Ensure all supplies and tools are in the car and well maintained (include first-aid kit). The driver reports to his/her supervisor any missing or broken items. Responsible for the load he transports. Load and off-load his vehicle himself and checking the load is stored correctly. During trips, hand over waybills to the recipients, checking the state of the goods delivered and bringing the duly completed and signed reception form back to the logistics office. The driver is responsible for delivering intact the items that have been entrusted to him in the vehicle.  If there is a person in the vehicle with him that is also using or delivering these items to a particular place, the driver is still responsible for all items in his vehicle

►Other: All MSF staff is requested to be flexible and helpful and therefore they might be requested to perform additional activities whenever it is needed. Participate in meetings and/or trainings as requested and as scheduled by the logistician or field study coordinator
