Based in Eshowe/Mbongolwane, KwaZulu-Natal Province,  Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is planning to conduct an operational research called An implementation study on Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) adherence in KwaZulu-Natal” as soon as the protocol is accepted by Ethical Review Board of The university of Cape Town. The objectives of the research are (1)Assess the feasibility and acceptability of providing daily oral PrEP to young women (2)To measure the uptake of PrEP when offered within a prevention package (3) To measure adherence to daily PrEP when offered as part of  a preventive package among key population groups, in particular young women between 18-35 (4)To measure adherence to intermittent PrEP when offered as part of  a preventive package among key population groups, in particular young women between 18-35.

At the 1st phase of the research, a qualitative research will be conducted aiming to better understand perceived risky sexual behaviors, perception on HIV prevention methods including PrEP, and enablers and barriers to take and adhere to PrEP among young people in Eshowe and Mbongolwane. Findings of this qualitative research will be used to develop key messages for health promotion and adherence counseling session.

Responsibilities:

  • To attend an induction training
  • To recruit informants in the MSF community testing sites in collaboration with MSF counsellors and recruitment coordinator
  • To conduct focus group discussions with minimum support from a research team leader
  • To store obtained paper based or electronic data in a designated room or computer  
  • To translate and transcribe audio data  
  • To attend daily or weekly debriefing sessions with a research team leader  

Requirements:

  • Bachelor degree in social science (sociology, anthropology, or equivalent), public health or psychology
  • Master degree in one of these fields is asset
  • Have experiences of conducting focus group discussions in research setting (at least twice)
  • Experience with NVIVO is asset
  • Have basic knowledge on HIV
  • Proficiency in MS Word and speedy typing skill
  • Fluency in English and IsiZulu
  • Willingness to adhere to the humanitarian principles of Médecins Sans Frontières and research ethics such as keeping information obtained in the research confidential
  • South African citizen or holder of a valid South African work permit
