Thousands of people have fled their homes after a surge in violence and intimidation across South Africa. Many have been forced to leave with nothing. Families are sheltering in churches, parks, community halls and at border crossings, uncertain of what comes next.
For many, escaping violence has also meant losing access to healthcare. People living with HIV, tuberculosis, diabetes, hypertension and mental health conditions have been forced to leave behind their medication. Pregnant women have been unable to attend antenatal appointments. Children needing urgent treatment have struggled to reach hospitals safely.
Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is on the ground providing emergency medical care wherever it is needed.

MSF teams are already providing emergency medical care to displaced families across South Africa.
Our emergency teams are operating mobile clinics across Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, the Western Cape, Musina and Beitbridge to provide:

🔴HIV, TB and chronic disease treatment
🔴Maternal and child healthcare
🔴Mental health and psychological support
🔴Hygiene and dignity kits
🔴Referrals to hospitals for patients requiring specialised care

Grace* is 30 years old and two months pregnant. After armed men forced their way into her home, she fled with her three children.
Despite telling her attackers she was pregnant, she was beaten. When she later tried to register her pregnancy at her local clinic, she says she was turned away before she could receive medical care.
Today, MSF teams are working to ensure women like Grace can access healthcare safely and receive the medical support they urgently need.
