The headquarters of the German section of MSF - Ärzte ohne Grenzen e.V.- is in Berlin. Over 250 employees work in the fundraising, communications and engagement, finance and administration, human resources, and project departments.
Your Responsibilities
As Head of the HR department, you are responsible for both the operational and strategic human resources management of the German section of Médecins Sans Frontières/Ärzte ohne Grenzen (MSF), based in Berlin.
This includes HR management for the office team as well as the recruitment and deployment of medical and non-medical staff to our project countries. You will lead a committed HR team of 60 employees, including direct leadership of 5 managers. As part of the management team, you actively shape the strategic direction, leadership, and further development of MSF Germany.
At the international level, you represent the German section within the MSF network and contribute your HR expertise to global strategies and initiatives.
In your role , you will
- Define and shape the long-term vision of MSF Germany as a member of the Management Team.
- Take a leading role in developing, defining, and implementing both the functional HR strategy and the organisational strategy
- Guide the HR department by providing direction, making clear decisions in dialogue with your Management Team, setting priorities, assigning tasks, and delegating responsibilities.
- Lead and strengthen the HR leadership team and, together, you continuously develop HR products and services.
- Together with the Management Team, address the HR needs and challenges related to both international deployments and all HR matters at the Berlin office—from recruitment and staff development to labor law issues.
- Foster a healthy and trusting work environment through your appreciative leadership style and genuine interest in your team, thereby encouraging motivation, openness, and collaboration.
- As department head, you support employee development through regular feedback, development dialogues, and annual performance reviews.
Requirements
- At least 10 years of professional experience in Human Resources
Strong strategic thinking skills and the ability to contribute actively to the organisation’s future - Several years of leadership experience, including managing diverse teams and staff in leadership positions
- Several years of leadership experience, including managing diverse teams and staff in leadership positions
- Confident in leading change processes and making decisions in complex stakeholder environments
- Excellent ability to build and maintain internal and external relationships, nationally and internationally
- Fluency in German and English (both written and spoken)
- Experience in large (international) non-profit organisations is an asset

- Payment according to a transparent internal salary structure; in this position, according to group 7 with full-time employment (40h/week) from 5,168 Euro to a maximum of 6,538 Euro, depending on the relevant professional experience
