1.SUMMARY OF THE POSITION

Doctors Without Borders South Africa Mission NPC is a Global network of principled professionals who specialize in medical humanitarian work driven by our common humanity and guided by medical ethics. We work together in teams, small and large, to respond to the medical needs of people affected by conflict, disaster, epidemics, and those excluded from healthcare
Doctors without Borders seeks to employ a suitable part-time Medical Interpreter to verbal interpret, in person or remotely, during daily medical activities (medical round, consultations, interviews, meetings, etc.) and written translations, from the mission language to local language(s) or vice versa, in order to ensure accurate, respectful, fluent and confidential communication between medical staff and local population.

2. OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the medical team and SEU evaluator in facilitating meetings, focus group discussions, and key informant interviews through face-to-face interpretation and/or note-taking during sessions in a culturally sensitive and culturally appropriate manner
  • Transcribe notes from recording devices obtained from interviews and group discussions
  • Apply training principles and knowledge on cultural mediation and interpretation in facilitating and interpreting activities
  • Translate questionnaires, responses, and other documents from Xhosa to English and vice versa
  • Ensure confidentiality and data privacy of all subjects and documents acquired

GENERAL

  • The tasks listed above are not exhaustive. Flexibility is a qualification in a humanitarian aid organization, it may be asked of employees to perform tasks other than those listed in this Job description. According to the volume of work, these tasks may evolve, and the MEDICAL INTERPRETER should be available to carry out any other tasks assigned to him/her by his/her supervisor.

3. REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Essential Matric, university degree desirable, health knowledge advisable.
Experience: In group facilitation and translation.
Languages: Essential Advanced English (C1/C2) and native Xhosa speaker.
