MSF staff member fatally shot in a hospital in Sudan

On 4 July, a Ministry of Health staff member at the MSF-supported Saudi Maternity Hospital in Omdurman, Sudan, died after being shot while moving within the hospital compound.  We extend our deepest condolences to their family, friends and colleagues.

Though in recent weeks, the insecurity has led to fewer patients reaching the hospital, it still helped around 30 women per day give birth on average, half of them requiring caesarean sections.

The hospital is now closed, with staff looking for a safer place to resume services. There are now even fewer places for women to seek medical care while giving birth in Omdurman and Khartoum.

The violence and insecurity have led to medical workers being injured or killed and are drastically limiting people’s access to vital healthcare services.

Hospitals and medical workers are protected under international humanitarian law. It is mandatory to take all precautions to ensure medical staff and facilities are safe and not affected by violence.
