SUMMARY OF THE POSITION
Doctors without Borders seeks to employ a suitable qualified nurse mentor to participate in the development of nurses and improving their methods by analysing their working practices, and knowledge, and provide training (either theoretical or bedside) according to MSF mission/project protocols and universal hygiene standards/precautions, to ensure the quality and continuity of care for the targeted population in the Facilities.
1. Accountabilities
The Main Focus of Mentorship
- Conduct a comprehensive assessment of gaps in knowledge and/or experience among the target nurse mentee groups
- Develop a monthly mentorship plan comprising topic(s), objectives, and mentorship strategy that is adapted to each mentee’s level of clinical knowledge
- Provide side-by-side consultations of complicated patients with the mentee and, when needed, consult with the HIV/TB doctors for advice.
- Ensure that patients who need further investigation or hospital care are correctly referred to the district hospital
- Train in the implementation and/or maintenance of a drug and supply management system to avoid stock ruptures
- Assist in developing/updating guidelines, key messages, and supervisory checklists for HIV/AIDS counselling and health promotion.
- Occasionally requested to support the DoH Nursing Team
- Promote, always implement, and follow the universal hygiene standards/ precautions, bio-hazard prevention
and infection control, security rules and other protocols and procedures in the medical premises and ensure high standards of hygiene of his/her working environment - Oversee care and treatments according to medical prescriptions, as well as assist Doctors during consultations/daily rounds and other medical procedures
- Ensure patients are properly received and installed in the health service. Ensures that patients with a lack of autonomy are assisted, especially regarding their feeding, personal hygiene, movements, and comfort
- Monitor admission, surveillance and follow-up of patients, meaning assessment of their health state evolution, and identification of emergency or any deterioration, participate in health education of the patient (and family) when necessary
- Monitor department-related pharmacy and medical equipment control and maintenance (carrying out inventories, carrying out stock takes of medicines and material at every team changeover, ensuring no material is taken out of the nursing area/wards without prior authorisation, and without checking its quality. - Initiate the NCD, TB and HIV mentorship programme in the designated catchment area under the supervision of the NAM and PMR in collaboration with the Doh and academia
- Develop a long-term strategy under the supervision of the NAM and PMR to address the NCD, HIV/TB mentoring needs at the designated sub-district
- Work with health facility management teams, PMR and NAM in the design, implementation and monitoring and
Evaluation of the DSD service implementation plans of the health facility and associated pick-up points - Assist health facility teams in the development of clinical standards and procedures for NCD and HIV/TB services
- Support the Doh in its integration of NCDS & HIV/TB aligned to PHC reengineering and ideal clinic strategies through the mentorship programme.
- Conduct and facilitate training related to NCDs & HIV/TB management, both clinical and managerial to improve treatment outcomes in the designated facilities
- Formulate the mentorship programme for each facility based on the Monitoring and Evaluation assessment tool
- Provide direct on-site support for nurses and auxiliary staff during patient visits at the facility
- Support other project management activities according to the needs of the project, like operations research
- Provide mentoring and technical assistance in the implementation and operationalisation of the project DSD (CCMDD) interventions at the newly developed sites
- Assist in the ongoing assessments of both desktop and on-site training needs of the facilities
- Support the development and implementation of Quality Improvement Plans in conjunction with the NAM and the DoH
- Work in collaboration with other stakeholders and clinicians in improving the management of NCDs and HIV/TB
- Support the IECHP team to engage with NGOS/CBOS in the DSD programme
- Support the PMR/ EAM in the operation research activities and drafting the toolkits
- Facilitate training and capacity building of NGOS and DOH
- Perform other duties as required and directed by the NAM
GENERAL
The tasks listed above are not exhaustive. Flexibility is a qualification in a humanitarian aid organisation, it may be asked of employees to perform tasks other than those listed in this Job description. According to the volume of work.
REQUIREMENTS
- Education Registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Clinical Nurse
- Practitioner or as a specialist Nurse Educator, Recognised degree or college
- Diploma in nursing, Grade 12/ NQF level 4
- Experience: Minimum of 12 months of experience in mentorship or education
- Minimum of at least 3-5 years of general nursing experience in a Primary Health Care setting.
- Language Fluency in English and isiXhosa is essential
