Corporate and Foundation Partnerships
Building strategic partnerships with Corporates, Trusts, and Foundations, helps MSF deliver emergency medical care to people affected by conflict, disasters, and epidemics as well as those excluded from healthcare in over 70 countries worldwide. Whilst informal giving through direct donations to individuals, is an intrinsic part of African society, there is also a growing opportunity to expand formal philanthropy in Southern Africa through organised humanitarianism. Formal philanthropy allows for long-term and significant support for our projects throughout the African continent and abroad.
At MSF Southern Africa, we offer many ways for your organisation to achieve meaningful social and environmental results, through strategic partnerships, corporate grants, employee giving, employee engagement, and customer activation. Our philanthropy team works closely with each of our strategic partners to create custom fundraising packages or campaigns that are aligned with each organisation’s philanthropic goals.

Transparency and Accountability
We are committed to being accountable and transparent with our donors. We inform you actively about who we are, what we do, how we work and how we use your donation. We strive to communicate the reasons for our decisions, the results of our actions, and the challenges inherent in our work as a medical humanitarian organization. Our accounts are independently audited, and both our activity and financial reports are accessible and transparent.
Corporate Gift Acceptance Policy
A commitment to independence, neutrality, and impartiality is central to MSF’s identity. These principles allow us to gain the acceptance of the local communities in the countries where we work and to speak out when we see injustice. They are key to keeping our teams safe.
It is for this reason that we do not take funds from organisations working in industries that conflict with our humanitarian goals and values, as set out in the MSF Charter or which may limit our ability to provide humanitarian assistance and to bear witness. MSF does not accept gifts from companies in the following categories:
Military and Arms Industry
We are unable to accept donations from companies or industries involved in defence or arms manufacturing as their work profits from providing the means to cause human suffering. Some of our largest interventions are as a result of armed conflict, for example in countries like South Sudan and Yemen. Any association with this industry in such settings would not only go against our humanitarian and medical values but could compromise our independence and our ability to deliver medical care. Our ability to be free from political, economic, and religious agendas is what enables us to cross borders and checkpoints to access patients.
Tobacco and Alcohol Industry
As MSF’s actions are first and foremost medical, our teams work with respect for the rules of medical ethics, in particular, the duty to provide care without causing harm to individuals or groups. We are therefore unable to accept donations from tobacco corporations as they conflict with MSF's commitment to medical ethics.
Pharmaceutical Industry
Funding from pharmaceutical companies is not accepted by MSF to avoid a conflict of interest with the MSF Access Campaign. The campaign was launched in 1999 to promote access to, and the development of life-saving and life-prolonging medicines, diagnostic tests and vaccines for patients in MSF programmes and beyond. Their objective is to lower the cost of medicines, vaccines, and tests through competition; to ensure patents are not a barrier to access, and to push back against harmful trade deals or entrenched industry interests. Any financial partnership with a pharmaceutical company would conflict with this objective.
Extraction Industry (Oil, Gas, Mining)
We are unable to accept donations from companies or industries involved in the extraction industry. Extraction companies often work in countries where MSF is providing medical care and can be perceived as contributing to conflicts and/or causing social and environmental damage, that have an impact on the populations we work with. In order not to compromise MSF's operational work and/or the security of our teams and beneficiaries in the field, MSF does not accept funding from the extraction industry.
