Every year, an estimated 5 million people are bitten by snakes worldwide. Out of these, 125,000 die and 400,000 are permanently disabled or disfigured.

Many of the victims are children and the majority live in rural areas with limited access to healthcare. But treatment is luxury in many places. It is rarely available, and when it is, it can cost up to US$ 500 per victim.
