Lenacapavir, a highly effective long-acting HIV prevention medicine administered just twice a year, has the potential to transform HIV prevention efforts. Yet despite the urgent need for expanded prevention options, access in Mexico remains uncertain due to a combination of regulatory, affordability and supply challenges.
The report analyses Mexico’s current pathway to accessing lenacapavir, including its regulatory status, pricing challenges and the impact of patent protections on future availability. It explores how exclusion from generic licensing agreements, limited global supply and potential data exclusivity barriers could affect access, while highlighting the legal and policy tools available to support more affordable and sustainable supply. The report concludes with recommendations for government, civil society and pharmaceutical companies to help ensure that lenacapavir becomes available at scale to all those who could benefit from it.
