Power of Choice: Operational Learnings from the Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) implementation of LA PrEP
This report summarises Doctors Without Borders / Médecins Sans Frontières’ (MSF) early experiences introducing long-acting HIV prevention options in programmes in Malawi, Mozambique, Eswatini and other supported settings. Drawing on operational data, programme outcomes and feedback from communities, the briefer explores how long-acting PrEP is being implemented in real-world contexts, highlighting both its potential to improve HIV prevention and the challenges that continue to limit equitable access.
The report is a practical resource for policymakers, programme managers, donors, advocates and healthcare providers seeking to scale up long-acting HIV prevention. It provides evidence on uptake, persistence, service delivery models and implementation barriers, while sharing lessons on community-led approaches, supply constraints and person-centred care. The findings offer actionable recommendations to help ensure that long-acting PrEP is accessible, affordable and delivered in ways that best meet the needs of people most at risk of HIV.
