New wave of displacement due to recent fighting in Abs

More than 50,000 people are now displaced in north Abs due to a new round of clashes in the last week of March. Concerned Jaume Radó, MSF’s Head of Mission in Yemen, has shared a flash quote.

“The front line in the north of Abs, Yemen was reactivated in the last week of March. After several days of intense fighting, more than 18,000 newly displaced people have arrived in Abs and the surrounding areas. In total, there are over 50,000 displaced and the situation could get worse if there are new clashes. We also saw an increase of war wounded in our hospital in Abs. This centre is the only secondary structure providing lifesaving and medical services to over 1.2 million people living in Abs and the surrounding districts.

The main humanitarian needs of the displaced population are medical attention, water, shelter, food, and NFI (non food items). An increase in medical assistance is needed and the provision of clean water and sanitation services is urgently required, given that the country is suffering a cholera outbreak which is aggravating the already weakened medical condition of the population. MSF has a CTC (cholera treatment center) functioning in Abs and it is finalising the setup of a new one to attend the displaced and local population in the area.

There are groups of civilians that we cannot reach due to security reasons. MSF asks all warring parties to ensure the security of the civilian population and of the medical mission so that the basic services can be provided to displaced people and war wounded”.
