South Sudan: 90,000 refugees fled to Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia

Close to 90,000 people have fled South Sudan since conflict erupted in the country one month ago, becoming refugees in neighbouring countries including Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia.

MSF has set up medical activities on the Kenyan side of the border area to South Sudan, as hundreds of refugees are arriving across the border each day. MSF is mainly supporting the MoH to do screening for notifiable diseases, nutritional screening and measles vaccination for children from 6 months to 15 years. MSF has also set up a basic health post at the border point.

MSF’s emergency team report that 80% of those fleeing the violence are women and children. Many have walked for long distances in intense heat, with little food or water, and are in a poor state of health when they reach the border.
