MSF, Doctors Without Borders, MSF activities in Kazakhstan
In 2024, our teams returned to Kazakhstan to provide rehabilitative care to survivors of violence and ill-treatment in the city of Almaty.

In collaboration with local partners, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) provided people from the Kandastar community with mental health services, medical referrals and health education, as they return to Kazakhstan after years of living abroad in China, Mongolia and Uzbekistan.

MSF IN KAZAKHSTAN IN 2025 In 2025, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) continued to develop a project for survivors of violence and ill-treatment in Kazakhstan, with a focus on community engagement.

The project, launched in Almaty in 2024, supports vulnerable groups, such as the Kandastar community, ethnic Kazakhs who have returned to Kazakhstan after years or even generations of living abroad. Many of them face challenges integrating into society in Kazakhstan, or suffer from mental health problems that developed during their emigrant life. Specialised care helps Kandastar community members overcome the unique challenges of reintegration by fostering wellbeing and adaptation to life in Kazakhstan.

Our activities include individual mental health consultations, health education, and support with medical referrals, delivered through community-based approaches and collaboration with local partners. Outreach activities, including home visits, and peer support networks, help build trust and ensure cultural relevance.

In Malovodnoye, a semi-rural settlement on the outskirts of Almaty, we opened community and health promotion services to assist Kandastar communities in accessing care. Throughout the year, the project helped people overcome barriers, such as language, cost, and transportation constraints. The increased involvement of peer supporters and the establishment of a community advisory board fostered community participation and created space for people to shape the care they receive.
